Reading Learn

Reading is more than getting through the words.

Understanding a text draws on many different skills. Reading Learn gives learners a place to strengthen the particular part that needs work — from foundational reading skills to main ideas, relationships, evidence and comprehension.

Reading skill is not age.

A teenager, postsecondary learner or adult may need to strengthen one part of reading without being a younger learner or less capable overall. Needing help with one particular skill simply means that skill deserves some attention. It does not tell us what the learner is capable of everywhere else.

The skills that help meaning come together.

Reading draws on many different skills. Reading Learn can help with word parts and longer words, vocabulary in context, main ideas and details, cause and effect, how ideas connect, evidence in a text, and comprehension more broadly. Learners can spend time with the particular piece that is getting in the way instead of feeling as though they have to start over.

Sometimes hearing it helps.

Many lessons include read-aloud support. Where it is available, learners can listen to a lesson, passage or instruction, and Eddie can speak responses aloud when listening works better than reading.

Ask about the text you are actually reading.

Eddie can help with the question in front of the learner — clarify an idea, explain something another way, or help them think through a part of the passage that is still unclear. The learner keeps doing the reading and making sense of the text.

Strengthen the skill without shrinking the learner.

Spend time with the reading skill that needs work, then take it back into texts that are actually yours.
